KIERON WINTER

1958 – 2008

The Bristol Pegasus Motor Club regrets to announce the sudden death of its chairman, Kieron Winter, on 5th May.

Whilst marshalling at the Wessex Sprint, Kieron collapsed with what is believed to be a massive heart attack and, despite the immediate attendance of the event medical team, he was unable to be revived.

Kieron will be remembered for continuing reforms within the club, presiding over the name change and comprehensive overhaul of the club’s articles of association. He was also very much a “hands on” chairman, being involved in the marshalling or organisation of almost every major club event. One of his most recent achievements was being a proud member of the team that won the Autoglym quiz. He ran committee meetings with a mixture of experience, wisdom, tolerance and humour that will be hard to replace, and always found time to welcome and encourage new club members. In short, he was a true “grass roots” motorsports enthusiast.

Although Kieron’s passing will be a devastating blow to his friends, colleagues and above all his family, we can take some comfort from knowing that he died doing something he enjoyed surrounded by people he could call friends. He will be sadly missed.

The club also extends its deepest sympathies to Kieron’s family at this difficult time.

The funeral was 12:00 midday on Friday 16th May at South Bristol Crematorium, Bridgwater Rd, Bristol, BS13 7AS

A Thank You from the Winter Family

To Bristol Pegasus Motor Club.

Mary, Mike and family would like to thank most sincerely all the members of the BPMC for all their cards and messages of sympathy, as well as all the condolences posted on the Club website, following the untimely death of Kieron.

Your kind sentiments have been a great comfort to us as we were not fully aware of just how many friends Kieron had in his connections with other clubs and West Country motor sport.

We would also like to thank all those who attended his cremation and donated to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance Appeal.

Thank you all very much.

Mary and Mike

Sadly Missed
Kieron was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. I had the great pleasure of working on and off with Kieron for a number of years. He always had time for a friendly word, and was well respected by colleagues, and customers alike for his calm manner, and thoughtful approach. Kieron you will be missed.

DIS-BELIEF
Having opened the mailing from BACMC and removed the contents I glanced quickly at the piece of paper that came out with Backfire. My initial reaction was is this some sick joke about to lead on to some club promotion or a quick take on the date-it wasnt April 1st.Kieron was a year younger than me and I am already being monitered visa vie my heart as on my Fathers side their is a history of heart problems so this hit me even more than the death of one of my Foster-sons at age 32.We are constantly reminded as to how frail the human body really is.I can only agree with all the comments about Kieron that have already been posted. In an age of mis-trust,backstabbing and selfishness it is accurate to say that Kieron was one of the good guys-a truly decent human being. As a Christian I cannot explain as to why God has chosen to take Kieron from us now but do concur with a comment made that I dont believe Kieron has finished his work and whilst he may not be with us anymore physically am sure he is already active in the spiritual realm. This is a huge loss to the club as he was a true ambassador and always approachable.Am sorry that I was unable to make it to South Bristol. To his family I do want to say that it was a privilege to have known Kieron and my sincere condolences. To those who were there on the Monday I cannot imagine how you must be feeling but my sympathies go out to you as well.

Kieron worked here in Washington for six months in the early ’90’s and was a regular visitor to the US Marine Corp for many years. He was always very well respected and liked by his customers, both military and civilian. Reading the tributes I am struck by the number of times that gentle, gentleman and smile were used, all exactly the things that I remember and admire about Kieron. Roll-Royce will miss him, I will miss him, his friends will miss him and we will sadly never see that beaming welcome again. Kieron you made things around you better for your presence, we’ll miss you.

Kieron
I was deeply saddened to learn of Kierons untimely passing. A true gent with whom it was an absolute pleasure to work and socialise. I first met Kieron a long way back when I was invloved in Concorde. He always had a ready smile and the time to help out a new boy. The years drifted by and it wasn't until I was lured into a position in Sydney, that I once again came back into contact with Kieron. The following years when Kieron both led and supported the Rolls-Royce product range in Australia was a great time. A professional guy with an easy going manner that drew people to him. He will be sadly missed. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends at this very sad time.

What a friendly, gentle-man our friend Kieron was, filled with enthusiasm, energy, optimism and common sense. It was Kieron who first welcomed me to BACMC, his friendiness being the reason I got more involved, supported by his encoragement and enthusiasm over the years. What i really admired in Kieron was his calm thoughtfulness, he was a very selfless man always giving. When I or others were full of fire wanting action reliable Kieron would council; consider wisely all aspects whilst calming things then offer measured advice leading to very sensible, agreeable solutions. And how much did he do? The incredible amount of time and energy he put into his job and local motorsport, unfailingly with that friendly smile and pleasant word, always time for people. A great leader, enthusiast and true friend. I will miss you mate, I cherished the times we had, have learnt an awful lot from you which i shall hold dear for ever, thank you. Sincere condolences to Kieron's family and to all his friends. Would say rest in piece but am sure you are very busy somewhere organising and encouraging.

A True Gentleman

The tradgedy of Kieron's premature death will have a profound affect on everyone who knew him.

A natural leader who led by example, without complaint and never had a bad word to say about anyone.  Kieron was a great diplomat who greeted everything and everyone with a smile.  He had an eloquence and dignity that rose above any situation and left a lasting impression on all those that came into contact with him.  Kieron possesed qualities that are sadly lacking in todays modern world which will be a poorer place for his passing.

I consider it a privilege and pleasure to have known him because Kieron was above all - A True Gentleman.  My heartfelt condolences go out to all his friends and family at this very sad time.

Condolences
I did not know Mr Winter but it was very clear at the briefing given by the clerk of the course that many club members were traumatised by the events of the afternoon; he clearly had a great many very good and close friends. I had hoped that the immediate attention of the medics might haved saved Mr Winter so I was greatly saddened to hear that he had not survived. Please accept my most sincere condolences for your sad loss.

Sad news of a friend
I was shocked to hear the sad news of such a terrible loss to Kieron's family. My association with Kieron goes back many many years and I found him always ready to help. We have lost a genuine friend.

A tragic loss
Although a distant member of BPMC, Kieron always greeted me with a welcoming smile and a few friendly words. I was extremely saddened when the news filtered back to the paddock that it was Kieron who had been taken ill. He was a true grass-roots motorsport enthusiast and will be very sadly missed.

I have just heard the news and I feel totally gutted. Kieron was just a real nice guy, and one of natures's gentlemen. I'll never forget that infectious cheery smile whenever we met - he was one of those people whom you somehow always felt better for meeting. He was a first-class Chairman and the Club owes him a huge debt of gratitude for everything he did. The selfless way that he worked for other people was an object lesson to us all. You may have left us, Kieron, but we'll not forget you,
John Delafield 08 May 2008
I feel I must add a few words. As a member of the MG Car Club I’ve organised the co-promoted Filton Autotest in September. I could always rely on Kieron’s full support; he would willingly marshal or take the role of steward, whatever was required. He was a real good guy, although we didn’t meet very often he was always cheerful and happy to chat, just as we did during the lunch break on Monday. It was a pleasure to have known Kieron, I can only echo the many tributes and condolences already posted. John Delafield

Sadness and Shock
I have only been a member of BPMC for about 6 years and a long distance one at that. But the thing that has struck me most of all was the respect Kieron obviously had for others and others for him. Kieron was probably the first person I got to know in the club and was, as others have already said, unflappable, a hard worker and a great organiser. I had a call from Nick Wood on Tuesday evening to be told of the awful news from Colerne, I am saddened and shocked by his death. My sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues.

Words are hard to find and really cannot convey our feelings. Kieron was a true "Gentle Man" and friend who always had a smile. We will miss you . Our condolences to his family

Friend and colleague
I new Keiron through the motor club, but in particular through working together on the Pegasus Engine supporting the US AV8B operations. Keiron was always a professional in what he did, and a very likeable individual, popular with the people we worked with in the US and equally with those within Rolls-Royce. Within the motor club I was always impressed with Keirons attitude and the support he gave to the club. My condolences go to his family, he will be missed.
Bob Bull 08 May 2008
I would like to add my condolences to Kierons Family. Kieron was one of the nicest guys I have dealt with in many years of Club motorsport, always keen to help and advise, he will be greatly missed by us all.

An inspiration to all in grassroots motorsport

There are so many great things I could say about Kieron, so where do I start…

I first met Kieron back in 1990 when I was introduced to the motor club and the first thing that struck me was his friendly calm nature. Nothing phased him. I later joined the committee and could see first hand how smoothly and objectively he controlled the club and events. I was involved with the behind the scenes motorsport stuff with Kieron during that time and he was such an inspiration on how he dealt with all the red tape and people.

I still have the yellow baseball hat that he had especially made up for me as Pegasus Sprint start line marshal; such was his thoughts for everyone involved in his events.

As I now live a long way away from Bristol, I was in weekly email contact with Kieron discussing stuff about the club and its future, and he was always keen to bring grassroots motorsport up to date. He was the motor club in every facet.

The one thing that sticks in my mind’s eye and ear, was his smiling face and great laugh, every time we met. He will be dearly missed by everyone that knew him.

My sincere sympathy to his family and friends, for their great loss.

I will always carry his inspiration in human nature and motorsport with me.

Richard

A terrible loss

Having already written two obituaries for Kieron I thought it might be easier to express my thoughts on this page... Of course it isn't.

The tributes here are testimony to the high regard in which Kieron was held, I can only echo them.

Kieron, it was an honour and a privilege to have known you and to have served on the club commitee with you. I shall always admire your abilility to lead by example and quietly motivate those around you. Your passing is a terrible loss to the club and local motor sport. My deepest sympathy to your family and all who knew you.

Martin

I had only met Keiron a few times, and yet I am finding it very difficult to come to terms with what has happened. It is a huge loss. My thoughts are with his family and everyone in the club, he always played a big part in all the events and will be missed very much.
Tim Murray 08 May 2008

I'm finding this very difficult to write - I still can't quite take in what has happened.  I knew Kieron for getting on for 30 years, first as a fellow club member and later as a committee colleague and good friend.  In all that time - as others have already said - he was always good-humoured, unflappable and reassuringly dependable.  You always felt that if Kieron was there, everything would be OK.  And of course he was there, at nearly everything to do with the club, and all the work he put in put most of the rest of us to shame.  I feel so sorry for his Mum and Dad, and all his family.

Goodbye Kieron, and thank you for everything.  We will miss you terribly.

My Friend

I first met Kieron (or "Kier-ee-on" as I preferred to call him) 21 years ago and over those years I am proud to call him my friend. All the comments on his life by other people are all true, but it is my experiences of the man that are most important to me!

People who know me me, are aware that I am not the quietest of people, but I am at my most subdued now.

Long may his memory live on. It will with me. Paul B.

Bernie Humphrey 07 May 2008
I'll remember him the way he remembered me

I first joined the old BACMC in about 1985 with a complete shed of a Mk1 Escort and was immediately made welcome by Kieron asking questions of what I wanted to do with it, was it actually road legal (yes it was) and what sort of motorsport I was interested in.

I stayed in the club for a few years, bought a house, left the car to rot in a garage for 7 years and rejoined in the mid-1990's.  Went along to a club meeting and the first person to come up and ask how I was doing was the same bloke.  We'd both gone grey-haired but he had the same straightforward interest in what I was doing, pleased I still had the same car, pleased to see it actually looked  road legal and really welcoming.

I last saw Kieron at the Castle Combe sprint some weeks ago and he was the same cheery, welcoming guy I'd always known.

I for one will miss him and his true interest in motorsport as a whole and the people involved in it.

Bernie

Condolences
Though I didn't know Kieron, I heard the news via the Westfield Sportscar Club forum and was moved to offer my condolences to his family and friends directly here. I hope that my message doesn't cause offence and that, in some small way, this helps the people he left behind in their grieving for his absence and their remembrance of his life.

Very Sad
I was marshalling at the sprint on Monday as I always do. It was Keiron who got me interested in marshalling. I am sure that he will be missed greatly by the club. My condolances to his family and his friends.

You will be missed
Sometimes this world is not fair, and it is hard to believe you are no longer with us at such a young age. You did so much for the club and for motorsport in general in Bristol, but above all you were one of the nicest people anyone could hope to meet. You never had a bad word to say about anyone and you were always the first to help anyone who needed it. When the rest of us did not have the energy or enthusiasm it was always you who would step up to the mark and lead by example. Your friendship will be missed and our thoughts are with your family at this difficult time. You will never be forgotten.
Cherry 07 May 2008
Will miss you
very much Kieron. This time last week you were sat here in our kitchen. I can't believe we'll never see you again. Your help and advice was always freely given. You were an inspiration and if I manage to contribute only a fraction of what you gave to the club I'll be pleased. It's already been said but Keiron you were Pegasus how will we cope without you? I hope you knew how much you were loved by us all. Cherry and Nick x

No justice
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Kieron's collapse by phone on Monday afternoon from my son Pete who was at Colernne and even more so the next day to hear of his death. I had known him since first joining the club in the early 90s and it was he that encouraged me to have a go at sprinting. He was always there, always pleased to see you, always helpful and always efficient. I was amazed at how much work one person could contribute to the club, he was the Pegasus. That he should die at such a young age is not right, there is no justice in this world! Thank you Kieron. My condolences to his family and friends. Richie Devall

So sad....
I had been competing in the Sprint on Monday and still can’t take this tragic situation in. It is so unbelievable. I have known Kieron for a considerable time and have enjoyed serving on the club committee alongside him for the past five or six years. He was such a key member of the club and on top of the more obvious roles, he did so much more behind the scenes than most people could ever imagine. Whenever the ‘Committee Rose-bowl’ was up for nomination I felt it was Kieron that deserved it every year although he was far too humble to of accepted it like that. Kieron had a natural flair for being able to organise, enthuse and encourage all those that were fortunate enough to know him as well as being an exceptional diplomat in keeping the inevitable club ‘issues’ under control. He was a true ambassador for the Pegasus club and will be sorely missed. I also think the medics and others involved on that afternoon deserve our thanks and praise for their efforts and I would like to say that I was in support of the decision taken by the organisers to end the event when they did. God bless Kieron and my thoughts and condolences are with his family

We'll Miss You

What can one say to such a very sad event. Words fail me at the moment.

My thoughts are with Kierons family at this difficult time, thankfully he was with friends doing something he enjoyed when he was taken.

As long as we remember the things Kieron did & the things he taught us, he will never die.

I have just returned from a short break and looked at the Club web site to learn of Kieron's sudden death. I am shocked and would like to offer my condolences to his immediate family. I have only been a member of Bristol Pegasus for a couple of years, but I will always remember the way Kieron always had time to speak to and welcome a new member to the club meetings and events. He was a real gentleman. What a desperately sad loss. Merlin P Wigley

Sad news....
I was very sorry to hear the news about Kieron. I have not competed for some years, but when I was competing, I had several interactions with him, and always found him helpful, and amicable. I recall him always being on hand to layout, and dismantle events, and his time and efforts are appreciated. It is my opinion that Kieron was instrumental in keeping Bristol motorsport alive. This is a sad loss. Please pass my condolences to his family and freinds. Thank you. Matt (&Phil) Rumney. (Bristol Motor Club.)
